Petroleum Engineering - A New Course
Al Habeeb has introduced‘Petroleum Engineering course for the first time in Hyderabad and SVU  regions for the benefit of the local students who want to pursue a career in Indian and International Oil Companies and field training.

What is Petroleum Engineering?

Petroleum Engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be crude oil or natural gas. The two key areas of learning will be oil exploration and processing of crude oils.

Petroleum Industry in India
India is the fifth largest consumer of primary energy and the third largest consumer of oil in the Asia–Pacific region after China and Japan. Due to high economic growth, there is a huge need for enhancing supply of energy resources. Also, dependence on imported petroleum continues to grow and is ultimately impacting our country’s long term growth. Of the 26 sedimentary basins identified in India, so far, only 20% of the total area has been well explored. The remaining areas need to be extensively explored with the best of technologies, with special emphasis on the frontier basins. With the introduction of the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP), introduction of the much-needed capital and state-of-the-art technology to exploration sector could be made possible. With the policies and regulations being the most transparent in the world, the NELP has revived a healthy spirit of competition between National Oil Companies and private and multinational companies. NELP was conceptualized by the Government of India, during 1997-98 to provide an equal platform to both Public and Private sector companies in exploration and production of hydrocarbons with Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) as a nodal agency for its implementation. It was introduced to boost the production of oil and natural gas and providing level playing field for both public and private players. Till now, 9 rounds of NELP have been completed, 320 Sedimentary Blocks were awarded and more than 400 profit sharing contracts have been signed, out of which 168 are in operation.

Career Prospects
Petroleum engineering has historically been one of the highest paid engineering disciplines. Petroleum engineering course offers wonderful job opportunities at global and domestic levels. Opportunities in oil and gas sector are ample in Gulf countries, Mexico, Canada, Indonesia and Thailand with very high annual income packages. Higher education opportunities are good all over America and Europe too.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median income for petroleum engineers is $98,380. In terms of starting salaries, the average starting salary for petroleum engineers who have earned a Bachelor’s degree is $60,718. According to a recent salary survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, bachelor’s degree candidates in petroleum engineering received starting salary offers averaging $62,236 a year. They are among the highest paid engineers. Forbes.com (2007) reported that petroleum engineering is the 24th best paid job in USA. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, petroleum engineers hold about 17,000 jobs in the United States. This represents 1.1% of the 1.5 million jobs held by engineers in the U.S.

Petroleum engineers work mostly in oil and gas extraction, professional, scientific and technical services, and petroleum refining. Employers include major oil companies and hundreds of smaller, independent oil exploration, production, research institutes, and service companies. Most petroleum engineers work where oil and gas are found. Large numbers are employed in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alaska, and California, including offshore sites. Many American petroleum engineers also work overseas in oil-producing countries.

Core Companies
Employment opportunities are vast and exist in the private, public sector and foreign oil companies; technical service providers, tertiary sectors like insurance, IT, Banking, Business Advisory and Consulting; Associated Industries like Petrochemical, Paints and Dye and in Overseas Countries like in ME, SE Asia, China, Russia and CIS countries. Organizations in which the graduates get absorbed are Reliance Industries Ltd., ONGC, Schlumberger, Shell, Gas Authority of India Ltd., British Gas, OIL., Halliburton Services, Essar Oil, GSPC, Cairn Energy, IOCL, Baker Hughes, Reliance Energy, NIKO Resources, GEOENPRO, MECOM Ltd., etc. The public/private/JV Companies, who mostly participated in the bidding of exploration of the sedimentary blocks and presently working in India are :
  • Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd
  • Oil India Ltd
  • Gas Authority of India Ltd
  • Indian Oil Corporation Ltd
  • Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd
  • Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd
  • Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd
  • Reliance Petroleum Industries
  • Cairn India Ltd
  • Essar Oil
In addition to above, many service providing companies are working in India and are located in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Rajahmundry etc.

There is much scope for these petroleum engineers to get absorbed not only in India, USA, Russia, Australia, UK, Malaysia, Indonesia but also in many Gulf countries.

Petroleum Engineering @ Al Habeeb

There are limited Petroleum Engineering courses in India mostly available in Dhanbad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Rae Bareli and Dehradun. Al Habeeb College of Engineering and Technology, Hyderabad has taken initiative in starting this course for the first time in Hyderabad affiliated to JNTUH, Hyderabad. Andhra Pradesh.

The B.Tech course offered here is on par with any other such course offered by universities internationally. During the first year of study, students will learn about Mathematics, Basic Sciences, Basic Engineering, methods and techniques. From the second year the specialized courses that are offered include general geology, surveying, chemical process calculations, momentum transfer, petroleum geology, process heat transfer, thermodynamics, instrumentation and process control, well logging, drilling technology, well completions and testing, reservoir engineering, petroleum production engineering, natural gas engineering, surface production OPS, Pipeline engineering, petroleum refining and petro-chemicals, oil and gas plant design, safety and health environment, modeling and simulation methods, enhanced oil recovery and project management.

The unique feature of this course is that the theory classes are supplemented by a compulsory practical training in the oil fields (India or abroad) in the summer of every year. We have tie ups with Oil Companies, India; King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, KSA; Petroleum Institute, Abu Dhabi, UAE and with Alaska University, USA for industrial interactions. Thus, the products coming out from the college will be tailored to suit the requirement of the industry in India and abroad.

The college has highly experienced teaching faculty and technical personnel and is well equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories to deal with this special subject. Retired high profile Scientists from ONGC and Professors from King Fahd University, KSA and Petroleum Institute, UAE and other countries are our expert visiting Professors.
